Addictions
Finding it difficult to stop a behaviour, even though part of you wants things to be different?
Whether it's alcohol, drugs, gambling, gaming, internet use, or another habit that's becoming difficult to control, addiction can leave you feeling stuck.
- Is this actually a problem?
- Why can't I seem to stop?
- Am I ready to make a change?
- Why do I keep going back, even when I don't want to?
Whatever stage you're at, support can help.
A Different Way to Understand Addiction
Addictions often start for innocent reasons:
- relief from stress
- escape from difficult emotions
- comfort or reward
- distraction from problems
- stimulation or excitement
Over time, these behaviours become more habitual. The brain strengthens pathways that support them, while the behaviour becomes woven into daily life.
Addictions can involve substances such as alcohol or cannabis or behaviours such as gambling or pornography
Understanding the role a behaviour plays in your life is often the first step toward changing it.
Where Are You Right Now?
Considering Change
You may be starting to wonder whether there's a problem, but feel unsure about what to do next. We will help you:
- evaluate what's happening objectively
- access accurate information
- Understand patterns and explore the pros and cons of change
- make informed decisions without pressure or judgement
Making a Change
If you've decided something needs to change, we'll focus on practical strategies to help you move forward.
- understanding triggers and urges
- building alternative coping skills
- reducing high-risk situations
- developing realistic goals
- creating a plan for lasting change
Maintaining Progress
Many people find that staying successful is harder than getting started.
- identify relapse risks
- prepare for challenging situations
- strengthen healthy routines and relationships
- build confidence in your ability to maintain change
A note about shame and setbacks
We also recognize that shame can become part of the cycle. Many people experience a lapse, feel discouraged or ashamed, and continue the behaviour as a way of coping with those feelings. Our goal is to provide a non-judgemental space where setbacks can be understood, learned from, and addressed before they become longer-term relapses.
How We Work
You Don't Have To Figure This Out Alone
It helps to have someone who understands both the science of addiction and the realities of everyday life.
Specialized experience, used in service of your change
For over 20 years, I've worked in addiction treatment and research, including training at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and developing addiction and mental health programs for Alberta Health Services.
Together we'll work to:
- understand what's driving the behaviour
- build motivation and confidence for change
- manage urges and setbacks
- develop practical skills for long-term success
- address the broader issues that may be contributing to the problem
Looking Beyond the Addiction
Addictions rarely exist in isolation.
Many people are also struggling with:
- anxiety
- trauma
- depression or low mood
- stress and burnout
- relationship difficulties
- ADHD or emotional regulation challenges
Addressing these concerns is often an important part of creating lasting change.
Rather than focusing only on the addiction itself, we take a broader view of your wellbeing and the factors contributing to the problem.
